![]() ![]() I can use a Dell UltraSharp U2515H 1440p monitor at native resolution to display 3x 80 character code windows and a sidebar on both editors. These extensions are designed using Javascript and Python, respectively. Extensions and plugins are the two core concepts of each editor. The only thing I dislike about split windows is how they are handled Sublime allows you to define a layout, which is why even when no files are open in the split pane, you will always see your layout. There have been no crashes or slowdowns for some time because both editors are stable. Sublime Text is thought to be faster, but it is not until VSCode is used in practice that performance becomes an issue. You should consider whether the code editor performs well, has stability, looks good, feels good, or is Extensible. I uninstalled Sublime Text 3 after about five hours however, I continue to use Vscode for the last month. Sublime Text has been an excellent app for me for many years, but VSCode trumped it because the pros outweigh the cons. Of course, you can always tweak the colors to better suit your needs and preferences. You should now have a color scheme and interface that looks almost identical to Sublime Text. Next, open the User Settings (Code > Preferences > User Settings) and add the following lines: “lors”: Save the file and restart Visual Studio Code. Once it’s installed, open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux, Cmd+Shift+P on macOS) and type “Material Theme: Apply Theme” to apply the theme. First, install the Material Theme extension from the Visual Studio Code Marketplace. There’s a way to make Visual Studio Code look and feel almost exactly like Sublime Text. I've also been trying VIM a lot lately to see if it improves my workflow, for the time being I just installed/enabled VIM functionality for VSCode and Sublime. If you’re a fan of Sublime Text’s sleek and minimalist interface but have found yourself needing to switch to Visual Studio Code for one reason or another, you’re in luck. I also recently gave Atom another week long try and still found the lack of performance annoying, I would love to support something completely open source but until they address performance issues, it's just not going to happen for me. Had I been introduced to both at the same time, I'd likely favour VSCode. I keep yo-yo'ing between Sublime and VSCode only because I'm so used to Sublime. I've tried a good variety of editors and they have all made improvements recently. I quickly realized that it's a memory hog and that I would never use all (or most) the built in functions so I couldn't justify the cost (especially since they change their billing to month-to-month). It was alright, integrated terminal was a nice feature. Somewhere between Sublime and Atom, I gave PHPStorm a go. Notifies you when a package failed to install and gives suggestions on how to fix it.Very fast file/method/function look ups.It had all the ease of use that Atom had and all the performance Sublime had. Slow indexing to navigate files/methods/functionsĪfter being thoroughly disappointed by Atom's performance, I went back to Sublime but I still wanted to try something new.Slow with big files (crashes sometimes).Slow to open (especially with a variety of packages). My initial impression to Atom is was great, I like the sleek design and ease of use. Customization is difficult for new usersįast forward a few years and Atom is released, so I thought I'd give it a go.Very fast file/method/function look-ups.Here's a quick run down of the pros and cons: Pros I’ve used v2 and the most current v3 with a variety of packages. Sublime Text was my first editor (after using Notepad++ in college) that I really fell in love with. ![]() Just a reminder that my workflow involves full stack web development, so I’m biased to that. This is an overview of my pros and cons of the following editors: Sublime Text, Visual Studio Code, and Atom. Text editors are something that had always interested me, I’ve always tried to find an editor that allows me to do the most while having good performance. ![]()
